East Coast (IX): Boston, Day 1

This is the ninth in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond partthird partfourth partfifth partsixth partseventh part, and eighth part). Boston, Massachusetts is one of the oldest cities in the United States, having been founded in 1630. I loved the city and my time there, but my memories are tinged by the horror of the Boston Marathon bombings, which occurred just a fortnight after I left the city. Still, I highly recommend a visit for anyone travelling through the northeast United States.

East Coast (VIII): New York, Part 5

This is the eighth in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond partthird partfourth partfifth part, sixth part, and seventh part).

My last day in New York came far too quickly. For all that I had seen and done, I had not even managed to venture out of Manhattan before my time in the city was up. I would spend this last day crossing the final ...

Travel tips for the United States

I've found myself giving lots of advice about travelling to the US to many people over the last few months, and I thought I should get around to writing down some of these. This post is a grab bag collection of tips for Australians looking to visit our neighbours across the Pacific. There's much to sort out when planning these trips, and I hope that this post helps cover some of the key issues.

East Coast (VII): New York, Part 4

This is the seventh in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond partthird partfourth partfifth part, and sixth part). The tardiness of this post is regretted - July/August/September are always very busy months!

My fourth day in New York was to be a walkabout day of exploring. I started by catching a subway north from Chelsea, back to the Columbia University area. Just near the ...

East Coast (VI): New York, Part 3

This is the sixth in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond partthird part, fourth part, and fifth part).

My third day in New York started off very sunny, and I had planned to take the Staten Island ferry (which is free!) on a round trip to get photos of the Statue of Liberty. Sadly, Liberty Island itself was still closed due to the damage caused by Hurricane ...

East Coast (V): New York, Part 2

This is the fifth in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond part, third part, and fourth part).

The rain mostly stayed away during my second day in New York, and I took advantage of the respite to go walkabout on Manhattan Island. My morning started with a particularly New-York style breakfast of a savoury bagel. I then walked to the east, towards the Flatiron district and its eponymous ...

East Coast (IV): New York, Part 1

This is the fourth in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first partsecond part, and third part).

It was snowing in Washington DC as Tara and I departed - she to the airport, and me to Union Station. Our time there had seen the weather go from brilliant sunshine to dull overcast to snow, and in the ten minutes it took me to reach the train station I was coated in ...

East Coast (III): Washington DC, Day 2

This is the third in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first part here and second part here).

Our second and final day in DC dawned cloudy and cold, and it remained that way for the entirety of the day. Somewhat disappointed after the beautiful sunshine of the first day, we were still thankful that the rain stayed away. Our day began with breakfast at a little cafe called Teaism just ...

East Coast (II): Washington DC, Day 1

Following Detroit, I flew to Washington DC, meeting up with my friend Tara for a weekend exploring the capitol. This is the second in a series of posts about my East Coast US trip in March 2013 (see the first part here).

As my sole day in Detroit wound to a close, I chilled with Patrick and Elizabeth at their apartment before heading back to the airport. This was my second flight with Delta Airlines and it would take me ...
