Project Resource Planner

Drag-and-drop planner for allocating team resources to projects

Project Resource Planner

About this tool

Let’s say you’re running a large engineering organisation, and you’re trying to figure out the best way to allocate people to projects across multiple reporting lines. You’re moving people around, teams are changing, and having a visual representation helps a lot to see where people are.

This tool came about from a terrible sketch that I threw into Claude.ai with the following prompt:

Help me create an editable version of this image that I can manipulate and add/change/edit. The vertical boxes are expertise (iOS, android, web), and horizontal boxes are workstreams / projects. At the top are EMs and UTLs, and alongside each workstreams is PM/Design. TLs are scattered through each.

The result was servicable, and several rounds of additional clarifications led to this tool that I used to help plan a team reorganisation. It wasn’t too long ago that actual companies were built around selling products like this.

Features

  • Define your engineering teams with managers and uber-TLs leading them
  • List out projects or workstreams to distribute team members across
  • Drag and drop workstreams or people chips
  • Save / load different plans to your browser local storage
  • Export and import a JSON version of the data for a more permanent copy
